So that you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, and so they are heedless.

The word has indeed come into effect upon most of them, so they do not believe.

We have placed shackles around their necks up to their chins, so their heads are raised.

And We placed a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and covered them, so they do not see.

It is the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them—they will not believe.

You only warn those who follow the Reminder and fear the Most Merciful unseen. So give them glad tidings of forgiveness and a noble reward.

Indeed, We give life to the dead and record what they send ahead and what they leave behind. Everything We have enumerated in a clear record.

Give them an example of the people of the town when the messengers came to it.

When We sent two to them, but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third. They said, “We have indeed been sent to you.”

They replied, “You are only humans like us, and the Most Merciful has not sent down anything. You are only lying.”

They said, “Our Lord knows that we have indeed been sent to you.”

“And our duty is only to convey clearly.”

They said, “We consider you a bad omen. If you do not stop, we will surely stone you, and a painful punishment from us will touch you.”

The messengers replied, “Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? No, you are a transgressing people.”

A man came rushing from the farthest part of the town, saying, “O my people, follow the messengers.”

“Follow those who ask no reward of you, and are rightly guided.”

“And why should I not worship the One who created me, and to Him you will be returned?”

“Shall I take besides Him false gods whose intercession cannot help me at all, nor can they save me, if the Most Merciful intends harm for me?”

“Then I would truly be in clear misguidance.”

“Indeed, I believe in your Lord, so listen to me.”

It was said, “Enter Paradise.” He said, “If only my people knew…”

“…how my Lord has forgiven me and made me among the honored.”

We did not send down upon his people after him any army from heaven, nor do We send such armies.

It was only a single cry, and suddenly they were extinguished.

Alas for the servants! No messenger came to them but they mocked him.

Do they not see how many generations We destroyed before them, who will not return to them?

And all of them will surely be brought before Us.

A sign for them is the dead earth: We revive it and bring forth grain from it, which they eat.

And We placed gardens of date-palms and grapes in it, and caused springs to flow therein.

So that they may eat of its fruit. But it was not their hands that made it. Will they not then give thanks?

Glory be to Him who created all pairs—what the earth produces, their own selves, and what they do not know.

A sign for them is the night: We withdraw the day from it, and they are left in darkness.

And the sun runs on toward its appointed course—that is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.

And We have ordained phases for the moon until it returns like the old dried date stalk.

It is not for the sun to catch up to the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. Each one is floating in an orbit.

A sign for them is that We carried their offspring in the loaded ship.

And We created for them similar things which they ride.

And if We will, We drown them, and there is no helper for them, nor can they be saved.

Except by mercy from Us and enjoyment for a time.

And when it is said to them, “Fear what is before you and what is behind you, so that you may receive mercy,”

No sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away from it.

And when it is said to them, “Give from what Allah has provided for you,” the disbelievers say to the believers, “Shall we feed those whom Allah could have fed if He wished? You are only in clear error.”

And they say, “When is this promise, if you are truthful?”

They await nothing but a single blast that will seize them while they are disputing.

Then they will not be able to make a will, nor return to their families.

And the trumpet will be blown, and they will come forth from their graves rushing toward their Lord.

They will say, “Woe to us! Who has raised us from our resting place?” (It will be said,) “This is what the Most Merciful promised, and the messengers told the truth.”

It was only a single blast, and suddenly they will all be brought before Us.

So today no soul will be wronged in the least, and you will only be repaid for what you used to do.

Indeed, the people of Paradise will be occupied with joy today.

They and their spouses will be in shade, reclining on couches.

For them is fruit, and whatever they desire.

“Peace” — a word from a Merciful Lord.

But stand apart today, O criminals!

Did I not command you, O children of Adam, not to worship Satan? Indeed, he is your clear enemy.

And that you should worship Me — this is the straight path.

Yet he led astray a great many of you. Did you not use your reason?

This is Hell which you were promised.

Burn in it today because of your disbelief.

Today We will seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify to what they earned.

If We willed, We could erase their eyes, and they would rush to the path, but how would they see?

If We willed, We could transform them in their places, so they could neither move ahead nor return.

Whomever We grant long life, We reverse him in creation. Do they not understand?

We did not teach him poetry, nor is it fitting for him. It is only a reminder and a clear Qur’an.

So that he may warn whoever is alive, and that the word may be fulfilled against the disbelievers.

Do they not see that We created for them, from what Our hands made, cattle which they own?

And We subjected them to them, so some they ride and some they eat.

And they have benefits and drinks from them. Will they not then be grateful?

Yet they take gods besides Allah, hoping they will be helped.

They cannot help them, even though they are a ready army for them.

So do not let their words grieve you. Indeed, We know what they conceal and what they reveal.

Does man not see that We created him from a drop, yet he becomes an open opponent?

And he makes arguments against Us while forgetting his creation. He says, “Who will give life to bones when they have decayed?”

Say, “He will give them life who created them the first time, and He is Knowing of every creation.”

He who made for you fire from the green tree, and from it you kindle.

Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? Yes indeed — He is the Supreme Creator, the All-Knowing.

His command, when He wills a thing, is only to say to it: “Be,” and it is.

So glory be to Him in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to Him you will be returned.
